Repeat prescription line

Many doctors and pharmacists offer a repeat prescription line. These lines relieve consultation hours and regular telephone service, improving the telephone accessibility of doctors' offices and pharmacies.

Patients call a repeat prescription line and are given a friendly welcome by the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. The caller is then asked to speak the name, date of birth, names and dosage of medicines and, if necessary, the pharmacy.

The IVR records the caller's answers and emails them to the doctor. At fixed times of the day, an assistant listens back to the recordings, approves the requests and passes them on to the pharmacy, which prepares the medicines. The patient can then collect the medication, often within 1 working day.

For the pharmacy, this distribution of repeat prescriptions has the advantage of reducing waiting times in the pharmacy.

An additional advantage for the patient is that the automatic repeat prescription line works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
